I love creating art! I wish there were more hours in the day to devote to my artistic endeavors. When I'm not sketching away or working at the computer, I'm living it up with my awesome husband Jeff and our equally as awesome toddler, Penny.

We love living so close to Washington DC, there is constantly so much to do and see, not to mention all the tempting restaurants and eateries.

Currently I'm a freelance designer and illustrator, and seriously it is the best job in the world for me.

What you will see on my gallery here is mostly my sketches and doodles and artistic musings that I do to blow off steam or get the creative juices a-flowing before I delve into my work. After all, my fanart needs a home too, right?

Hey friends-
My very first journal entry, how very exciting! And what also is exciting is everything on society6.com has free shipping!  While I only have a few humble pieces up at the moment, take a look at my selection if you so desire!

Here's the link: society6.com/LiliRibs?promo=18…

I just ordered my very first print of my own, and it turned out awesome!  They do a stand up printing job over there.  Now, to find a good frame...

Hello, Lili!

I love art so much, and I would be thrilled if I could have an artistic career once I am older. Though I still have quite a bit of time to figure out what I'd like to do, I have considered being a freelance illustrator. I'd like to see how it works for others. Does freelancing work for you, and is it as good as a full-time job? What kind of degree might you need? Do you find your job satisfying? What kind of jobs might a person take on as a freelancer?

(Sorry for the rush of questions! You're a great art role model, though, and I would really appreciate if you could answer one or two of my questions! Thanks!)

I'm happy to hear your enthusiasm for art! It is definitely a valuable skill to have, and especially nice that I can do it from the comfort of my home in my pjs! Currently my art isn't our primary source of income since I am now a full-time mommy, but it has been a wonderful side project that I do in my own time. It lets me blow off steam and keeps me happy. And of course, I love it! I would suggest before launching into freelance to get a few other design or illustration jobs under your belt to get a feel of the industry and what it requires. Although I never got my degree, or even took any design classes for that matter (my husband and I got into a pretty serious scooter accident, and I had to quit school to pay the bills. But I continued studying on my own with tutorials and practice!), I do feel like a degree in illustration or design is always beneficial to give you a leg up in the field. And having a strong, ever changing portfolio is just as important.

You can kind of choose your focus as a freelancer, but I like to keep my services pretty wide to attract a larger client base. While illustration is my first love, I do a lot of logos, marketing materials, websites and other things because those have a bigger market.

Anyway, hopefully that answers your questions. What I would really recommend is to do a lot of research since there is a lot more than just drawing that goes into freelancing; invoices, creative briefs, accounting, customer service, etc., always carry a sketchbook, and constantly look for new ways to improve your illustration skills!
